Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) Policy

Adopted  May 2024
Next review date:  May 2027 (Reviewed Triennially)

Policy Statement
KingsGate School acknowledges the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Children's Act in relation to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI - see definition below) that takes place on the school grounds.

Definition
NSSI (non-suicidal self-injury) can also be referred to as self-harm or self-injury. Self-harm is when someone directly and deliberately causes physical harm or injury to themselves, usually without suicidal intent. Students may self-harm/self-injure for different reasons, including as a coping strategy to manage difficult emotions and/or life events (e.g. anxiety, distress, bereavement, grief).

Self-harming/injuring behaviour can range in severity from minor to severe and can start at any age. As self-harm & self-injury can cause mental and physical health issues and are a risk factor for suicide, Kingsgate School has clear procedures in place for intervention and response.

Purpose
To support school management and the wider school community in the event of an NSSI. Clear procedural guidelines will be in place to support management and staff. Please refer to the procedural document.
