Policy Statement
The KingsGate School Board is responsible for ensuring that the school is staffed in the best possible manner to achieve its strategic goals. The Board will:
▶Establish clear delegations of responsibility in staffing matters to the Principal and ensure these are consistently applied.
▶Ensure that appointment processes are fair, transparent, and aligned with equal employment opportunity (EEO) and child protection legislation.
▶Involve a Proprietor representative in the appointment of any permanent teaching staff, including the Principal and Deputy Principal positions, to ensure alignment with the school’s Special Character.

Specific Appointments

Principal
An appointment committee of the School Board will be responsible for appointing the principal. 
The appointment involves negotiating a State Services Commission-approved employment contract.
The Board may engage external advisors or recruitment agencies as needed during the selection process.

Deputy and Assistant Principal Positions
An appointment committee of the School Board will be responsible for:
▶Shortlisting candidates.
▶Conducting interviews.
▶Selecting and appointing the most suitable candidate.

Positions of Responsibility (Middle Leadership Roles)
Any role with one or more Management Units (e.g., Heads of Department, Deans) will be:
Shortlisted and appointed by the Principal.
The Principal may consult relevant Senior Leadership Team members.

Teaching Positions
Permanent and long-term relieving teachers will be appointed by the Principal in consultation with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT). The Proprietor representative must be involved in the appointment process for all permanent teaching staff.
Categories include:
▶Permanent full-time teachers.
▶Permanent part-time teachers.
▶Long-term relieving teachers.
▶Short-term relieving teacher
▶Limited Authority to Teach (LAT)

Day-Relief Teachers
Appointed at the discretion of the SLT member responsible for the relief organisation.

Non-Teaching Positions
Appointed by the Principal.
Consultation with the Senior Leadership Team and relevant department heads may occur when necessary.

Education and Training Act 2020 (Staffing and employment provisions).
Children’s Act 2014 (Safety checking of employees working with children).
Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Commitment to equity and culturally responsive hiring).
Human Rights Act 1993 (Equal employment opportunities and non-discrimination).
Privacy Act 2020 (Handling of Personal Information in Hiring Processes).
State Sector Act 1988 (Employment conditions for school leadership roles).
