Physical Restraint Information

At KingsGate School, the safety and wellbeing of every student is our highest priority. We are committed to creating a caring, supportive environment where students feel safe, respected, and able to learn.
Our staff are trained to use positive behaviour support strategies and de-escalation techniques to help students regulate their emotions and resolve difficult situations. In the vast majority of circumstances, these approaches are effective and physical intervention is not required.
In rare situations where there is an immediate risk of serious harm to a student or another person, physical restraint may be used as a last resort, in accordance with the Education (Physical Restraint) Rules 2023 and Ministry of Education guidelines.

What Parents Should Know
Physical restraint is used only when necessary to prevent immediate harm.
Staff are expected to use de-escalation and other preventative strategies first.
Any incident involving physical restraint is recorded and reviewed.
Parents or caregivers will be informed if their child is involved in a physical restraint incident.
KingsGate School does not use seclusion.
