At KingsGate School, we have carefully considered the Ministry of Education’s expectation that students in Years 0–8 engage in an average of one hour per day of reading, writing, and mathematics. Rather than viewing this as a rigid timetable requirement, we recognise that the guidance allows schools flexibility in how learning time is organised across the week. This enables us to maintain a rich and balanced curriculum while ensuring that students receive purposeful and sustained instruction in these foundational learning areas.
Our approach is grounded in evidence-based teaching practices and reflects our commitment to both academic excellence and our Christian special character. Reading, writing, and mathematics are taught through explicit instruction, guided practice, and meaningful application across a range of learning contexts. While dedicated teaching blocks remain an important part of the school day, opportunities to strengthen literacy and numeracy are also woven throughout other curriculum areas where appropriate. This allows students to see these essential skills as tools for learning, problem-solving, and serving others.
KingsGate School remains committed to providing a broad and engaging educational experience that includes physical education, the arts, assemblies, camps, inquiry learning, and faith formation. By thoughtfully planning and monitoring learning programmes, we ensure that students receive strong foundations in literacy and numeracy while continuing to benefit from the diverse opportunities that contribute to their growth as confident learners and followers of Christ.
