Relationship Between the Board and Principal Policy

Adopted 17th  June 2019
Next Review Date: March 2027 (Reviewed Triennially)

Policy Statement
The school's performance depends significantly on the effectiveness of this relationship; therefore, a positive and productive working relationship must be developed and maintained. The School Board and the Principal form the leadership team, and as such, clear role definitions have been developed. The “3.2 Responsibilities of the Principal Policy” and “2.2 The Board’s Roles and Responsibilities Policy”, along with the School Board’s agreed Code of Conduct, should be read alongside this policy.

Purpose
The relationship is based on mutual respect, trust, and integrity.
The Principal reports to the School Board as a whole rather than to individual trustees.
Day-to-day relationships between the School Board and the Principal are delegated to the Presiding Member.
All reports presented to the School Board by staff (unless specifically requested by the School Board) arrive with the Principal’s approval, and the Principal is responsible for their contents.
There are clear delegations and accountabilities outlined in the School Board's policies, which are passed down to the Principal.
Neither party will intentionally withhold information.
Neither party will knowingly misinform the other.
The School Board must maintain independence from the Principal to fulfil its role.
The School Board is there to critique and challenge the information it receives, acting in the best interests of students at the school.
The Principal should be able to share their biggest concerns and greatest achievements with the School Board.
