NCEA Level 2 Pathway

The NCEA Level 2 Pathway is designed for students who are preparing for university, tertiary study, apprenticeships, trades, or future employment. Students complete compulsory courses in English and Faith & Life, alongside four option subjects chosen to suit their interests, strengths, and future goals. At KingsGate School, academic learning is delivered through a Christian worldview, helping students develop knowledge, character, and purpose as they prepare for life beyond school.

HOW TO SELECT YOUR YEAR 12 COURSES

 Step 1: Choose Your Qualification Pathway
Work with your parents, Dean, Head of High School, and teachers to decide which pathway is the best fit for you:
▶ NCEA Level 2
▶NZCFS Level 1 (Foundation Skills)
▶Alternative Pathways such as Te Kura, MIT Trades Academy, or Gateway (where appropriate).

Step 2: Select Your Compulsory Subjects
All Year 12 NCEA students must take:
▶ English
▶ Faith & Life

Step 3: Choose Four Option Subjects
NCEA students select four additional subjects from the available options.
You may choose from:
▶ Class-based teacher courses taught by KingsGate teachers.
▶ Class-based eCourses supported by specialist eTutor teachers.

Step 4: Think About Your Future Pathway
When choosing subjects, consider:
▶ University study
▶ Trades and apprenticeships
▶ Employment pathways
▶ Your interests, strengths, and gifts
▶ Subjects you may wish to continue in Year 13

Step 5: Consider Alternative Options (If Appropriate)
Some students may apply for:
▶ Te Kura Distance eLearning
▶ MIT Trades Academy
▶ Gateway Programme
Students interested in these options must meet course requirements and will meet with the Head of High School and/or Principal's Nominee to discuss their learning pathway.

Step 6: Submit Your Preferences
List your preferred subjects carefully. While every effort is made to accommodate student choices, some courses may not run due to staffing, timetabling, or enrolment numbers. Final course placements are approved by school leadership.

Step 7: Seek Advice Before Making Final Decisions
Before submitting your selections:
▶ Read the course descriptions carefully.
▶ Check any recommended prior learning requirements.
▶Talk with your parents, teachers, Dean, and Head of High School.
▶Consider how your choices will support your future goals and career aspirations.

Remember: Choose subjects that match both your interests and your future goals. The best course selection is one that keeps pathways open while helping you grow in your gifts, abilities, and calling.
