Preparing for the Future
Preparing for the Future
At KingsGate School, we believe education is about more than academic success; it is about helping young people discover the unique gifts, talents, and opportunities God has entrusted to them. Gateway provides students with authentic workplace experiences that allow them to explore possible careers while continuing their NCEA studies. Through structured workplace learning, students can see how their interests, abilities, and passions can be applied in real-world settings, helping them make informed decisions about further study, apprenticeships, employment, and future pathways.
Gateway aligns closely with our commitment to developing students who understand that work is more than a job; it is part of God's calling on their lives. Each placement provides opportunities for students to develop responsibility, perseverance, professionalism, integrity, and servant-hearted leadership as they contribute meaningfully in their workplace. Whether assisting in an early childhood centre, supporting a local business, working alongside tradespeople, or serving within a community organisation, students learn that every vocation has value and every skill can be used to benefit others.
This reflects our seventh Core Practice, Mission, Vocation, and Service, represented by the Houhere Tree. Just as the Houhere has traditionally been valued for the practical ways its fibres and bark were used to serve others, we want our students to recognise that their God-given gifts are not simply for personal success but for the flourishing of their communities and the advancement of God's Kingdom. Gateway provides a powerful opportunity for students to begin exploring how their future careers may become a means of serving others, participating in God's work of restoration and renewal, and living out their faith in everyday life.
As students step into workplaces and industries, they are encouraged to ask not only "What am I good at?" but also "How can I use my gifts to honour God and serve others?" In this way, Gateway becomes more than workplace learning; it becomes a journey of vocational discovery, helping students discern where God may be leading them and preparing them to enter adulthood with confidence, purpose, and a heart for service.
"The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve." — Mark 10:45
