What Does Gateway Look Like?

Gateway is much more than a workplace visit or job shadowing experience. Students are placed in authentic workplaces for a sustained period of time, often one day per week over a term or longer—where they become part of the team and experience the realities of the industry firsthand. Depending on their interests, a student might spend time working alongside a mechanic in an automotive workshop, assisting teachers in an early childhood centre, helping in a veterinary clinic, supporting tradespeople on a construction site, working with a local business, or gaining experience in healthcare, hospitality, agriculture, or technology. The placement is carefully matched to each student's career interests and learning goals, ensuring the experience is meaningful and relevant.

While on placement, students develop practical workplace skills that cannot be fully taught in a classroom. They learn how to communicate professionally, work as part of a team, follow workplace health and safety procedures, manage their time, solve problems, and take responsibility for their work. Many students also have their learning assessed in the workplace and gain credits towards NCEA or other recognised qualifications. Through these real-world experiences, students build confidence, maturity, and industry knowledge while discovering whether a particular career pathway is the right fit for their future.
