Credits That Count
Gateway is designed to connect workplace learning directly to a student’s NCEA programme. While students are gaining real-world experience in an authentic workplace, they are also working towards nationally recognised standards that can contribute credits towards NCEA and other qualifications on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF). These assessments are linked to the skills and knowledge students demonstrate during their placement, ensuring that their workplace learning is recognised as meaningful educational achievement.
A Gateway placement is not separate from a student's learning programme—it is carefully integrated into their overall course of study through an individualised learning plan. For example, a student interested in construction may complete workplace-based standards related to health and safety, building, or construction practices, while a student in an early childhood setting may work towards standards connected to education and caregiving. These credits contribute towards NCEA achievement and help students make progress towards future career goals.
Gateway also supports students who are working towards a Vocational Pathway Award. Vocational Pathways help students see how their NCEA learning connects to real industries and careers. Workplace learning and the standards achieved through Gateway often align with one or more of New Zealand’s six Vocational Pathways: Primary Industries, Service Industries, Social and Community Services, Manufacturing and Technology, Construction and Infrastructure, and Creative Industries. As students accumulate pathway-aligned credits, they may be able to gain a Vocational Pathway Award alongside their NCEA qualification, providing clear evidence of both academic achievement and industry-relevant skills.
For many students, Gateway provides the best of both worlds—earning valuable NCEA credits while gaining practical experience, exploring future careers, and developing the workplace skills employers are looking for.
