Policy Statement
School attendance is compulsory for New Zealand citizens and residents aged between 6-16 years. Students are required to attend whenever the school is open (refer to sections 36, 48, 49 and 242 of the Education and Training Act 2020). The research tells us that the fewer days students are at school, the less chance they have of achieving. Missing school is not just about missing learning, it's also about all the other opportunities that are missed. At KingsGate School we promote the attendance of all students in their class, every school day.
Guidelines
Class attendance
All teachers are responsible for checking attendance in their classes and for ensuring the absences are recorded accurately twice daily on the electronic roll.
Students should be encouraged to use toilets at break times and not during class times, as far as possible.
Teachers should ensure students who must visit the toilet during class time, return to class promptly.
In the case of sickness or injury, with a staff member’s permission, they will go to the office for assistance. First aid procedures will be followed and parents informed if necessary.
Attendance and punctuality
All students are expected to be engaging with school work whenever the school is officially open unless prevented by illness or for compassionate reasons.
Requests for special leave (such as holidays during term time) should be directed to the Principal in writing.
Parents are requested to notify the school if students are absent and it will be recorded in the Student Management System, (SMS).
No student may leave the school grounds without permission. They need to sign in/out before leaving and upon returning.
Students are expected to be punctual. The school programme starts at 8:40 am and students should arrive no later than 8.35 am. Students who arrive after 8.40 am will be marked as “late”.
All notified absences will be recorded in the SMS.
