Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

KingsGate School is a PB4L-SW school. PB4L-SW stands for ‘Positive Behaviour for Learning – School Wide’.

What is it?:

  • PB4L is a Ministry of Education framework that helps schools to develop a positive school culture that supports learning and positive behaviour.
  • The concept behind this is that like learning, behaviour is a skill that needs to be taught. PB4L helps to change the environment, systems and practices to support children to make positive choices.

PB4L-SW is a framework that underpins our school’s special character, vision and values. Our values are…

S – strength         E – empathy           R – respect           V – vision            E - endurance

How are we using PB4L at KingsGate?

  • KingsGate staff are supported through a Ministry of Education PB4L facilitator who helps set our school up for success. We have regular professional development on this.
  • At the start of 2021, KingsGate introduced a new system for spotting and rewarding positive behaviours in the playground. S.E.R.V.E. cards are awarded to students demonstrating our school values in the playground. See flowchart above for more information about this.
  • House points and marbles are still awarded in class for positive behaviour.
  • Teachers will teach positive behaviour skills in class and through clear expectations students will know clearly what is expected as a KingsGate student.

Positive outcomes of PB4L:

  • The school environment is positive and supportive
  • Expectations are consistently clear
  • Students are consistently taught expected behaviours
  • Expected behaviours are consistently acknowledged
  • Inappropriate behaviours are consistently responded to in a fair and equitable way
