Honouring God Through Skilled Work
At KingsGate School, we believe that all work has dignity and value when it is undertaken with excellence, integrity, and a desire to serve others. MIT Trades Academy provides students with the opportunity to develop practical industry skills while learning the habits, attitudes, and character required to succeed in vocational pathways. Through authentic tertiary learning experiences, students begin to understand that skilled trades and vocational professions play a vital role in strengthening communities and meeting others' needs.
This reflects our seventh Core Practice, Mission, Vocation, and Service, represented by the Houhere Tree. The Houhere has long been valued for the practical usefulness of its bark and fibres, which were woven and used to benefit others. In the same way, MIT Trades Academy helps students recognise that practical skills are gifts that can be developed and used in meaningful service. Whether students are learning construction, engineering, healthcare, hospitality, automotive technologies, or another vocational pathway, they are preparing to contribute positively to the lives of others through their knowledge, skill, and workmanship.
MIT Trades Academy also cultivates the character qualities that underpin both Christian discipleship and professional success. Students are challenged to demonstrate reliability, respect, perseverance, responsibility, teamwork, and a commitment to high standards. The programme recognises and celebrates students who show diligence, resilience, leadership, and a positive contribution to their learning community, reinforcing the importance of character alongside competence.
For Christians, vocation is not simply about what we do for a living; it is about how we use our abilities in service of God and others. MIT Trades Academy helps students see that excellence in practical work can be an expression of worship. Every building constructed, meal prepared, vehicle repaired, patient cared for, or service provided can become an opportunity to reflect God's goodness and contribute to the flourishing of society.
As students engage with industry-standard training and real-world expectations, they are encouraged to develop both capable hands and servant hearts. MIT Trades Academy equips young people not only with pathways into further training, apprenticeships, and employment, but also with an understanding that their future work can be a meaningful part of God's purpose for their lives.
Biblical Connection: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." — Colossians 3:23
