Policy Statement

KingsGate School is committed to the wellbeing of our staff and students by ensuring we take all reasonable steps to maintain the school as a drug, alcohol and illegal substance free environment.

Create a drug and alcohol free school environment in the interests of student health, academic success and social cohesiveness.

Promote sound health practices, personal responsibility and well considered lifestyle choices.

Ensure that the school community is informed about KingsGate School’s Alcohol and Drug Free Policy.

Make explicit to students and parents the disciplinary consequences of any involvement with drugs at school.

Document and inform the school community concerning KingsGate School’s position with respect to search and seizure in relation to drug-related offences.

Document and inform students and parents concerning KingsGate School requirements for counselling for students who breach this drug free policy.

For the purposes of this Drug-Free policy a drug is defined as tobacco, vaping, illegal drugs as listed in the Misuse of Drugs Act (such as marijuana, methamphetamine or “P”, and psychoactive substances such as “party pills”, “designer drugs”, and synthetic cannabis), inhalants (such as petrol and solvents), prescription and pharmacy-only drugs and/or medicines used outside medical or pharmaceutical advice and any other substances used for psycho-active effects.

The possession and use of any alcohol or drugs is not permitted on school grounds at any time nor at any school organized trips or activities sponsored by the school.

The entire KingsGate School property is designated alcohol and drug free.

Staff at KingsGate School are not permitted to consume, or be under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or solvents when school is in session (including school camps) and/or when they have responsibility for students during EOTC activities. Other adults taking part in any activity organized by the school are also bound by this ruling.

Staff or students who are using medication that may impair their ability to function normally should not be at school. Prescription medicine including Ritalin is managed under the ‘Administration of Medicines’ procedure.

Any student who consumes, is affected by and/or under the influence of, or is in possession of alcohol and drugs ‘at school’ will be subject to disciplinary measures that may include suspension or expulsion.

‘At school’ includes travelling to and from school every day, whilst in school uniform, and/or representing the school in any school organised trip or any other activity at which the student can be identified as a KingsGate School student.

When reasonable grounds for suspicion are established, a search will be carried out according to Ministry of Education best practice guidelines.

Breaches of the Policy By Students

No child should be using, in the possession of or under the influence of harmful drugs, alcohol or solvents at any time while under the school’s jurisdiction. If a teacher believes a child is under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs/solvents the Principal will be informed and the child dealt with through the school behaviour management procedures. Parents/Caregivers will be notified.

When it is established on the basis of reasonable probability that students have breached this policy, disciplinary consequences will be determined according to the individual circumstances of each case.

These disciplinary consequences may include:

a. Stand-down

b. Suspension

c. Exclusion

d. Counselling

In the event of a policy breach which is considered by the school to be illegal, at the discretion of the Principal, this breach may result in a police referral in order to verify the nature of the drugs and to uplift them; to conduct a search in order to locate and take possession of the drugs and to formally charge the student(s) if deemed necessary.

Staff will ensure that confiscated items are securely stored and/or disposed of.

Information relating to drugs which is collected by the school will be:

a. stored in the student disciplinary files

b. sent to the Ministry of Education.

Breaches of the Policy by Staff

A breach of this policy by a staff member will be referred to the BOT. A breach by any other person will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the BOT.

The school will make contact with local agencies that can help students or staff members who are found to have problems related to alcohol and/or drug use.

Alcohol on School Property

Alcohol will not be consumed by any person (student, staff, BOT, visitors or contractors ) at any time at KingsGate School. There is no person, group, location or event that is excluded in this statement.
